WHY CHOOSE RADIOLOGY?

Radiology is a fascinating branch and forms the heart of any hospital anywhere in the world. Radiologists are key to providing the clinicians with the correct diagnosis for patients. The responsibility and popularity of radiology is well known in the healthcare system.

It is a self-fulfilling field with exposure to interesting cases every day. Subspecialisation has brought more opportunities for the radiologist especially after the advent of interventional radiology. Radiology gone through colossal growth in the past decades due to rapid technological advancements and continues to grow exponentially.

1.
Vast syllabus - A Radiologist learns about the whole body as compared to other medical branches that deal with specific parts of the human body. Most of the top rankers opt for radiology as the postgraduate branch.
2.
Vital branch - Radiology is one of the most vital departments of any hospital. Almost all the departments within a hospital directly or indirectly rely on the Department of Radiology. Everyone of us would have gotten an x-ray done in our lives atleast once, isn’t it?
3.
Less stress - It is definitely less stressful than other fields like surgery or emergency medicine. Yes, the burden of cases to be reported can get overwhelming at times. But then, it is never as stressful as a surgical branch.
4.
High responsibility - It is a highly responsible job. Almost every patient’s treatment and further management depends on the report and diagnosis given by the radiologist. Radiologists are the unsung heroes of medicine.
5.
Constant learning - Since diagnostic radiology deals with patients referred from all other departments, a radiologist needs to read and stay updated regarding all those medical fields as well. Being a relatively young specialty, radiology is being updated regularly. If you like gaining knowledge constantly, then radiology is the branch to choose.
6.
The art of deduction - It is an extremely interesting branch as every imaging case is a puzzle. The level of observation and art of deduction of a good radiologist is often astounding. Radiologists and pathologists are the medical detectives. 'Sherlock? Elementary, my dear Watson!'
7.
Extremely Rewarding - It is highly rewarding in the sense that you’re decision-making decide the outcome of the patient. Each of your reports contributes to the treatment plan of the patient
8.
Less patient interaction - If you like to avoid talking to patients or people in general, then radiology is a good branch to consider.
9.
Advanced technology - If you like working on advanced machines and high-resolution monitors, radiology will amaze you.
10.
Image based - Compared to other medical branches, learning radiology is mostly image based. This this aspect of radiology is quite appealing if you are a visual learner.
11.
Money - the pay scale of a radiologist is usually great in most countries. However, you need to study a lot to become a decent radiologist.
12.
Interventional radiology - Interventional radiology is the subspecialty within radiology in which a radiologist uses imaging techniques to perform minimally invasive procedures and surgeries, usually through very small incisions. Most of these procedures are done on an outpatient basis and with the use of local anesthesia. This confers a lower risk to patients than major surgeries. It is an exciting branch if you do not conform to the imaging only aspect of diagnostic radiology.
